Process Paper
We chose the topic of the Japanese American Internment because this was a great injustice that is often acknowledged by the American people much like the Armenian genocide that took place in 1915. So we saw this as an opportunity to not only educate others on the injustice, but also as an opportunity to educate ourselves. Also by understanding the past, we can then understand how to prevent the same mistakes and truly appreciate the full extent of freedom guaranteed to every man, woman, and child in the United States of America and not take our freedom for granted.
By doing an online project project we were able to utilize not only online resources but external resources as well. Interviews and museum visits played a huge part in our research. We were able to interview Congressman Mark Takano, whose parents were internees at internment camps. We were also able to speak with Mary Tsukanawa at the Japanese American National Museum, who was personally interned in a relocation center. We were able to visit the Japanese American National Museum and utilize the information for the exhibits we viewed. Also, we were able to visit the Manzanar Relocation Center. At the center, we received more first-hand views on life in the camps due to the preserved barracks and other parts of the camp. The center also had museum exhibits inside that we were able to view, which include barrack rooms and quotes from many government figures during the time of the internment,
A website seemed to be the best option for every member within our group. It just would have been too hard to plan days to get together to work our final project by doing an exhibit or a performance. We all didn't really have the time to get together every other day to work on this project. By doing a website, we all had access to it even if we weren't together. We all had either laptops or tablets to access our group website and make contributions to it. Also, we were able to include a lot more visuals by using a website, including multiple photos and an interview. We wouldn't have been able to add such useful sources if we had been doing an exhibit or a performance. Assembling a website proved to be a wonderful option for us.
The topic of the Japanese internment of World War II relates to rights and responsibilities because the rights of the Japanese American people were taken away in a time of war when they were forced to leave their homes and jobs only to be moved into internment camps, where they were harshly mistreated and discriminated against because of their race. This topic also relates to rights and responsibilities because it was the government's responsibility to protect the rights and civil liberties of the American people. I believe this topic was most suitable for this year's theme because this injustice is not often acknowledged as an injustice.
